Gynecology is a medico-surgical specialty that studies and treats the various pathologies of the female genital tract and female hormonal disorders: menstruation, menopause, contraception, pathologies of the breast, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, etc. It also includes obstetrics, a discipline dedicated to monitoring pregnancy and childbirth.

When should you consult a gynecologist?

The first gynecological consultation is often done at the beginning of sexual activity in order to prescribe contraception. Thereafter, monitoring should take place at least once a year. Apart from this follow-up, it is imperative to consult in case of painful periods, pelvic pain, breast pain, menstrual irregularity, in the context of pregnancy and finally at the time of menopause.

Pathologies

Gynecology treats:

• STDs (sexually transmitted diseases),
• menstrual disorders,
• or screening for women’s cancers: breast cancer, uterine cancer

It is also involved in the treatment:

• endometriosis,
• prolapse (or organ descent)
• and symptoms related to menopause.

Chirurgie gynécologique
Pour certaines pathologies, le recours à la chirurgie est nécessaire. This is particularly the case for endometriosis, urinary incontinence, prolapse, ovarian cysts, lesions of the cervix, ectopic pregnancy, mole, fibroids of the uterus or again infertility (etc.)

Anyway, your privileged interlocutor remains your gynecologist. And if he deems it necessary, he will refer you to other specialists.
